Josh Mason is a 18 year old racing driver from Maresfield, East Sussex in England. He has raced with Lanan Racing in BRDC British F3 this season. I had the chance to chat with him.
youngdriversmonthly:
First of all, how are you doing today?
Joshua Mason:
I’m all good thank you.

YDM:
When and where have you started racing?
JM:
I started racing quite late. I was 14 and a half years old when I started karting at Whilton Mill.
-
YDM:
What is your favorite sport or hobby aside from racing?
JM:
Don’t really have a favourite sport but I’m still like playing football when I’m not at track.
-
YDM:
How did your family react when you told them you want to be a racing driver?
JM:
My family reacted in a good way. My dad was well up for it because I got my love for motorsport from him and my mother was at first nervous but she saw how much I enjoyed it so she was really encouraging after the early phase in my career.
-
YDM:
You’ve raced in British F3 with Lanan Racing for two and a half consecutive years now. What was your favorite moment with the team?
JM:
My favourite moment with the team was when I took my proper first win at Donington Park in the 2019 season. The team did work really hard throughout the season, so to give something back was really nice.
-
YDM:
Last winter you have competed in the MRF Challenge for the second time. Would you go there for a third time?
JM:
I would go back to MRF challenge but unfortunately it’s not happening this winter. Even though I came top 3 in the championship it’s still good way to keep my eye in.
-
YDM:
Seriously, how does it feel to overtake six cars in one corner?
JM:
Yeah, wouldn’t think that’s possible. To be honest I didn’t really feel anything. The other drivers made my race a little easier.
-
YDM:
As most of the drivers you have done some online racing during the lockdown earlier this year. Including my „Formula Drivers Challenge“, thanks for that by the way. What have you learned during this time for your on track racing career?
JM:
Well thank you for including in the series. I have learnt a lot by taking part. There were some very quick drivers within the championship, so I have mostly learnt to be more consistent and increase pace when needed.
-
YDM:
Do you have a best friend under the drivers in the paddock?
JM:
I do have a friendship group within the paddock. It started within the MRF challenge then I race 3 of them in the British F3 championship this season. So it was good the have familiar faces in the paddock.
-
YDM:
What tips would you give to a young boy or girl who wants to be a racing driver?
JM:
Tips I would give to young racing drivers is to work hard and enjoy what they are doing.
-
YDM:
Do you regret any decision in your racing career so far?
JM:
I wouldn’t say I have any regrets, just some wrong decisions. But I learnt from these wrong decisions so that I can progress further in the sport.
-
YDM:
What are your goals in the future? Where would you like to race after your feeder series career?
JM:
My ultimate goal is to race in Formula 1 but if not achieved then I would like to do LMP endurance racing.
-
YDM:
You‘ve tested Euroformula Open with Double R Racing last week in Portimão. How was testing & are you aiming to race in the series next year?
JM:
The test last week went really well, had good pace compared to other teams. I am aiming to hopefully race in Euroformula Open.

YDM:
How can your fans support you in the best way?
JM:
