with Jack William Miller

Jack William Miller is a 17-year-old racing driver from Indianapolis in the United States. He is racing with Miller Vinatieri Motorsports on the Road To Indy ladder. I had the chance to chat with him.

youngdriversmonthly:
Hi Jack, how are you doing today?
Jack William Miller:
I am well. Currently at Barber Motorsports Park for some pre season testing.
-
YDM:
When and where have you started karting?
JWM:
I started karting when I was three in kid karts racing locally then went on to race all classes of junior karts micro/mini max and tag in skusa and Florida winter tour. I also went to the karting world finales in Nola for rotax.
-
YDM:
And when did you start racing single seater cars?
JWM:
I started in single seater cars when I was 13 to be the youngest ever F4 driver.
-
YDM:
You and race cars. Was it love at first sight? What do you like most about racing?
JWM:
I’ve always been involved in racing, growing up at the Motor Speedway and my father raced IndyCar, so it has just always been part of my life and my passion.
-
YDM:
For the second time in a row you’ve raced in USF2000 this season. You’ve scored your first podiums. Are you happy with this years results?
JWM:
Yes I’m very happy with how last year went. Scored 3 podiums and came very close to a win. Overall it was a good season but we suffered a lot of DNF’s and some DNS. Only had one crash all year but we were plagued with mechanical and electrical problems that took away some podiums.
-
YDM:
Who’s your best buddy in the paddock?
JWM:
I would have to say my teammate Kent is a great friend and my previous teammate Dudu. Both great guys and super fast drivers.
-
YDM:
So you’re already racing for 14 years now. What was your favorite moment so far?
JWM:
My favorite moments would be my first podium in USF2000 and some of my Florida winter tour races.
-
YDM:
You are racing with Miller Vinatieri Motorsports. The team is co-owned by your dad, former Indy Car driver Jack Miller. How is it to work with him?
JWM:
It’s a enjoyable experience to work with him. I have a team of engineers and mechanics that I’m usually working with so I’m pretty busy on the weekend but it’s great to have the opportunity to work with him rather then driving for another team where I don’t know everything that’s happening.
-
YDM:
You‘ll race in Indy Pro 2000 next season for the first time. What do you expect from yourself? What are the goals?
JWM:
I’m super excited for Indy Pro next year and maybe some sports care stuff. I hope to be more in the title fight this year and hopefully get some wins. I know it will be tough as a rookie but I have a lot of faith I will be given a fast car, and I feel more then prepared physically for the new car.
-
YDM:
What are your hobbies aside from racing? Do you even have time for other things?
JWM:
My main hobby is biking. I love riding and I try to get out as much as possible. I did just over 3k miles in half a year.
-
YDM:
How does a normal week day in your life look like?
JWM:
A Normal week for me consist of school in the mornings and pitfit for lifting in the afternoon. I also run, bike, or swim after lifting weights. It comes out to about 20-30 hours a week of fitness to be ready for the more physically challenging car. I want my skill to be the limiting factor not that I’m tired at the end of a race.
-
YDM:
What is your ultimate target in your racing career?
JWM:
I think a very achievable goal would be IndyCar. Europe has always been a dream but realistically it’s not very kind to Americans so I think IndyCar is the best route.
-
YDM:
Do you have a favorite driver? Like an idol?
JWM:
I don’t idolize people or teams I idolize hard work and commitment. But that being said I look up to and respect a lot of drivers. I’ve been mentored and taught by Gabby Chaves and I don’t think I would be where I am today without him. Great driver and friend.
-
YDM:
How can fans support you? And where can they follow your journey?
JWM:
My fans can support me by following my Instagram to keep up with my racing and personal life, and they can always comment or dm me any questions. I’m pretty good with responding. They can also come to some of the IndyCar races in 2021 if covid allows, RTI will be racing almost all of our races the same weekend as IndyCar.
